Project Summary: The University of Cincinnati (UC) is inviting Ohio and national artists to submit up to eight (8) digital images of past work for the UC Law School Percent for Art Project commission. From the submissions, a group of semi-finalists will be selected to visit the campus, meet with the committee (comprised of UC faculty and staff), and visit the artwork site location (virtually if needed) to create a site-specific artwork proposal. UC employees and their spouses are not eligible to apply for this commission. Students enrolled in any degree-granting program are not eligible to apply.

Project Background and Building History:
Established in 1833, the University of Cincinnati College of Law is the fourth oldest continuously operating law school in the country, right after Harvard, University of Virginia, and Yale. Timothy Walker, along with Edward King and Judge John C. Wright of the Ohio Supreme Court, established the Cincinnati Law School, a small law school with 17 students, above a downtown office in a city that was then a frontier outpost.

The Cincinnati Law School became a department of the Cincinnati College in 1835, which gave it the authority to confer degrees. Until 1885, Cincinnati was the only law school in Ohio

At Cincinnati Law, our primary offering is the JD, or Juris Doctor, degree. But we also offer specialized dual-degree options, a growing international LLM program, and legal certificates that you can earn in just one semester.

All accepted students also gain access to our faculty experts, exciting real-world learning opportunities, and a community of learners dedicated to pursuing justice.

Mission of School or Site:  Elevating Justice
Cincinnati Law fosters a robust learning environment, led by passionate and engaged scholars, where diverse ideas about law in society are cultivated, collaboration is encouraged, and the knowledge, values, and competencies necessary to promote justice are elevated and imparted.

Whether you are interested in defending the wrongfully convicted through our Ohio Innocence Project, traveling abroad to work with international human rights agencies through our Urban Morgan Institute, combatting violence against women, and fighting economic inequalities in our Center for Race, Gender, & Social Justice, or by lifting underserved members of communities through our Entrepreneurship & Community Development Clinic, there is an opportunity for you.
At the heart of our social justice curriculum are our renowned Centers, Institutes, and Clinics. These experiences allow students to gain experiential knowledge in the practice and research of legal areas key to the social justice movement.

Diversity Statement
We are a community that draws its vibrancy from members—faculty, staff, and students—diverse in background, perspective, and point of view; and will strive to be a community in which all members are accountable for fostering critical discourse, engaging in meaningful interactions and contributing to the strength that flows from a diversity of thought and people for the benefit our College, our community and our profession. Through our comprehensive curricula and experiential learning opportunities, we strive to meet the diverse learning needs and interests of our students. Our commitment to diversity is reinforced through our journals, classroom discussions, and symposia. We value learning that occurs both inside and outside of the classroom. Our goal is to create an environment where divergent views and diverse members of our community are valued.
  1. We honor the diverse interests of our students by providing engaging doctrinal instruction and a variety of clinical and other experiential opportunities.
  2. Social and professional interests are furthered by activities that promote inclusive leadership and professional development through public service.
  3. Public service opportunities—landlord-tenant/VITA—other public interest service provided by students.
  4. We foster the diversity of student interests and styles by offerings that combine doctrine with practice.

Our community provides a safe environment where all are able to explore, engage, and be empowered without physical limitations. Those traditionally underrepresented and marginalized in the law community are welcome in this safe environment.

Artistic Goals of the Commissioned Piece:
The primary location for the commissioned artwork is the interior of the new Law School addition. There is a desire that the commissioned work be suspended from the ceiling and will be inspiring, thought-provoking, and engaging. Multiple materials can be used in making the work.

Practical Considerations:
Artwork considered for the UC Law project must be durable and suitably maintenance-free. The commissioned work may include electrical or lighting elements if easily maintained. The image of the artwork site location is above.

Selection Review Process:
Interested artists should complete the online form by visiting: https://ohiopercentforart-uclawcommissionannouncement.artcall.org
In addition to the eight (8) images uploaded, artists are requested to submit the following documents:
1.           a pdf that includes a current resume (maximum four pages) & artist statement
2.           an image list in the order the images are uploaded

The Advisory Selection Committee will review submitted materials and will develop a list of semi-finalist artists that will be invited to meet with the committee for a site visit. After the site visit, the semi-finalists will create a site-specific proposal for artwork for the UC Law School project. Each semi-finalist will be offered a proposal fee in addition to an honorarium for their site visit.  Artist proposals will be judged competitively by the Committee.  Submitted proposals become the property of the University of Cincinnati.
